Random Loops

A "rubber band" constrained to remain on a manifold evolves by trying to shorten its length, eventually settling on a closed geodesic, or collapsing entirely. It is natural to try to consider a noisy version of such a model where each segment of the band gets pulled in random directions. Trying to build such a model turns out to be surprisingly difficult and generates a number of nice insights, as well as some beautiful algebraic and analytical objects. We will survey some of the main results obtained on the way to this construction.

Higher Structures and Applications mini-meeting

05/11/2019 — 06/11/2019

@ Departamento de Matemática, Instituto Superior Técnico, Campus da Alameda

In this 2-day mini-meeting, members of the FCT-funded project Higher Structures and Applications (PTDC/MAT-PUR/31089/2017) will be explaining aspects of their research to each other and to anyone else interested, in short presentations with plenty of room for discussion.

IberiCOS 2020 — 15th Iberian Cosmology Meeting

06/04/2020 — 08/04/2020

Locate in map@ Departamento de Física, Universidade de Coimbra

The meeting has been postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2020 edition of the Iberian Cosmology Meeting (IberiCOS 2020) will be held at the University of Coimbra. This series of meetings is aimed at encouraging the interaction and collaboration between researchers working in Cosmology and related areas in Portugal and Spain. Researchers working in other countries are also most welcome.

These meetings are designed to encourage the presentation of work in progress. In this same spirit, the meetings will not be restricted to a single focused topic, but are open to cosmologists in the broadest sense, from mathematical cosmology and theoretical particle physics to observational astrophysics. Stimulating interactions between theorists and observers is also a particular concern of the organisers.

Applications to the Professor Jaime Campos Ferreira Prize — 2019

18/10/2019 — 15/11/2019

Applications to the 2019 Professor Jaime Campos Ferreira Prize are now open, until 5pm on November 15, 2019.

This prize was established in 2002 by the Department of Mathematics of IST with the twofold purpose of distinguishing, for academic merit in Mathematics, students at this school, and to honor Professor Jaime Campos Ferreira (1927-2016), Emeritus Professor at IST, who decisevely contributed to the creation and development of the Department and greatly stimulated the interest in Mathematics of several generations of students.

Particle Systems and PDEs VIII

02/12/2019 — 06/12/2019

Locate in map@ Anfiteatro Abreu Faro, Instituto Superior Técnico, Av. Rovisco Pais, Lisboa

The idea of the meeting is to get together researchers from two different areas of mathematics, namely Particle Systems and Partial Differential Equations, and to present recent scientific results in both areas.

We expect the participation of a vast audience, including young researchers and PhD students, and we intend to present and exploit the interdisciplinary nature of mathematics as well as its applications in various areas.
