Teaching Evaluations

I have a long history of teaching evaluations, having been a teaching assistant for most of time as a PhD student from 2005-2011, and a primary lecturer at UC Riverside in 2007 and again at Australian National University in 2012. In the following graph, you can see the trend in my average evaluations for each year I have taught:

In case you are wondering, here is how I made this graph. Of
the three types of evaluations I have had (teaching assistant at
Riverside, lecturer at Riverside, and lecturer in Australia), I
selected the question that seemed most comparable among the surveys:
questions 19, 19 and 7, respectively. I then normalized all scores to
be out of 5, and took the simple average of these scores for each year
of teaching. Note the graph omits the academic years 2008-2009 and
2011-2012, when I was not teaching.

I would like to point out that after my first year, my average evaluation score has almost always been 4.5/5. The average over all terms is 4.2, and neglecting that rocky first year this rises to 4.4, narrowly peaked with a standard deviation of 0.3. Hiding inside the year 2006-2007 is a nearly perfect score of 4.9/5 for the first course I ever lectured.

  John was able to convey concepts to us in the simplest way he saw fit, which meant that the concepts learned were always clearer and described in normal english. Drawings and visualisations help a heap with linear algebra. John's concern for a quiet class and for individual student concerns was great.

  Although last semester I didn't quite enjoy Linear Algebra because I thought that it wasn't very abstract and only consisted of row reduction, this semester I realised how wrong I was and how interesting Linear Algebra is, and this was thanks to the lecturer who taught the subject with a very different perspective to the way in which it was taught in MATH1115.
